The Young Me’s Dream

Daily writing prompt
When you were five, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Oh, I always wanted to be an astronaut.

Maybe an overstatement, I really just want to study the universe, not necessarily go there. It is always magical to explore the unknowns.

What I wanted to be.

As a child, I was captivated by the idea of exploring the vast expanse of space and dreamed of becoming an astronaut. I vividly remember hearing about the Mars One Project, an ambitious mission aiming to establish the first human colony on Mars. The thought of being part of such a groundbreaking endeavor filled me with excitement and wonder.

However, as much as I yearned to apply for the Mars One Project, the reality of my financial situation hit hard. Coming from the Philippines, a country where resources for such endeavors were limited, I couldn’t afford the costs associated with the application process. It was a bittersweet realization that despite my passion and ambition, financial barriers stood in the way of my dreams of space exploration.

Nevertheless, my fascination with space didn’t wane. Even though I couldn’t pursue a career as an astronaut, I found solace in knowing that the universe held endless mysteries waiting to be discovered. My interest in space ultimately guided me towards a different path, one that led me to work in the Philippine government’s energy sector, particularly in the field of transmission lines.

What I am today.

Joining the energy sector allowed me to contribute to a crucial aspect of infrastructure that powers our nation’s development. Working with transmission lines, I became deeply involved in ensuring the efficient and reliable distribution of electricity across the country. It may not have been the journey to space I once dreamed of, but it was a journey filled with purpose and significance, knowing that my efforts played a part in improving the lives of my fellow Filipinos.

In this role, I gained a newfound appreciation for the interconnectedness of systems, both on Earth and beyond. While I may not have traveled to Mars, I found fulfillment in helping to power the progress of my homeland, knowing that the same spirit of exploration and discovery that fueled my childhood dreams still burned bright within me. And who knows? Perhaps one day, humanity will venture even further into the cosmos, and my experiences in the energy sector will have laid the groundwork for future generations to reach for the stars.
